The Absolute BullSh*t that is “On Air” Episode 21

Aigoo… I have the problem I’m about to talk about with a lot of Korean dramas and it is no doubt a cultural difference. (Note: this might not make sense if you haven’t watched any of the series).

_____—-_____——______Here there be spoilers_____—-_____——______

So…. Kyung Min, the director of the drama played by Park Yong Ha, falls for Young Eun, the writer of the drama played by Song Yoon Ah, and she loves him also. But Young Eun doesn’t accept him because she’s a divorced woman with a child or something about not being worthy enough (bullshit #1). Then Kyung Min tells asks his mother (who’s been working for Young Eun), “If I fall in love with someone, will you like her?” and then he tells his mother she’s a divorcee (and the mother drops her fork DRAMA), and then he tells his mother she has a child. Kyung Min’s mother does a facial, ‘Oh hell no’ because she does not want any of that, saying, “I know people now don’t care that much, but I’m old fashioned so I care.” (Bullshit #2). And then Kyung Min, who’s sort of been rejected by Young Eun goes to her house for the first time with roses. Who does he see but his mother leaving with Young Eun. He puts the pieces together and realizes that his mother has been working for Young Eun (he doesn’t like is mother working). He throws the roses to the ground and walks away. (Grow the fuck up, will ya?) Then the mother realizes that the woman Kyung Min was talking about earlier is Young Eun. And she isn’t having any of that either. Kyung Min comes back to retrieve his mother but not before a long dramatic stand off typical to these ridiculous over dramatic moments in dramas (Bullshit #3).

Back at home, Kyung Min, talks to his mother about Young Eun again. The mother says “no”, “I don’t like it.” “I’ve cleaned for her, done her laundry, taken care of her kid, seen the faces she makes (relevance???) so I can’t accept her.” Kyung Min has red, teary eyes as his mother acts prideful and childish about the situation. (Now I know where he gets it from!) And then she says the most ridiculous thing ever, “I don’t force you to break up with her immediately, when you tell me this, it means you two have fallen deeply in love. You two are no longer young, find a way to solve this problem.” And then she gets up to leave (BULLSHIT #4) Is that a fucking joke? You’re deeply in love but I don’t give a shit break up because it’s “not socially acceptable”. God, the amount of mental cursing I did was ridiculous. Anyway, before she can leave the room Kyung Min tells her how sorry he is for pretending not to know she was a housekeeper and some other crap and she starts crying and I can not comprehend why these two idiots made such a big deal out of this in the first place.

So, basically, the problems are that 1) Young Eun is divorced. 2) She has a child. 3) Kyung Min’s mother worked as her housekeeper. 4)Something about seeing Young Eun’s faces. 5) Kyung Min’s mother doesn’t like talented women. Oh my fucking god, Shame on both your houses! I know a lot of people have been situations like this, which is sad, but it really pisses me off that it’s not cool to marry a divorced woman, but it’s cool for a woman to take back her husband after he’s cheated on her continually. Which is more socially indecent? The cheating or getting marrying to someone that actually loves you?

So continuing on, somehow Kyung Min thinks it’s a good idea to sit Young Eun’s son down and tell him that he likes his mom. (Mind you this is the first time he’s met the child). Is that appropriate? Meanwhile, I’m thinking, where did this kid come from (he’s been in like 3 episodes), how did Kyung MIn get him to go to Dunkin’ Donuts with him and is this not illegal in some states? Anyway, off on some train tracks Young Eun is looking at flowers and Kyung Min appears as if nothing happened like, “we’re dating now” (I paraphrase). And Young Eun is like, “How’s your mother?” He says she doesn’t like it but he does. And then he says some other stuff before saying, “Suh scriptwriter, you are my breath.” (That should be added to the list along with, “You had me at ‘hello’”, “You complete me” and other Jerry Maguire quotes and Loveholic lyircs). Then they hold hands and the rain starts.

Now onto Jang Ki Joon, the manager, and Oh Seung Ah, the actress. He goes off without telling her why or what he’s doing knowing that she loves him. He comes back and Seung Ah finds out that he went to the United States from talent agency to talent agency basically marketing her. I don’t understand why he couldn’t just tell her this. I’m guessing it’s that pride thing again. When he returns Seung Ah does more of her usual intense glaring and sulking.

Of course the episode ends happily but I can not get over the relationship dynamics in most Korean dramas. They drive me insane. Besides that I really enjoyed watching On Air, it was interesting, dynamic and honest. A bit silly at time, a bit high-strung at others but always enjoyable. Really worth watching.
